How many times have we gone into a store to purchase something we saw on television, only to be dissappointed once we saw that what was inside the package had no substance?
I am all for..."selling the sizzle" to get someone into a church. In other words, the packaging can change with the times and the culture. (What worked in the 1600s to get someone into church may not work now.) However, once in the church, there must be an offering of substance -- sound, Biblical truth being taught to the fellowship.
Jesus himself makes it "clear as crystal" that the road to heaven is very difficult, and even the gate is very narrow. This comes from the very Son of God!
I chatted this past week with a former Wheaton College classmate of mine, who is no longer attending a Christian church...and you know why? Because when she was really doing soul searching ten years ago, nobody could answer her questions! This is very sad.
I have some gay friends. The challenge for me has been to have the friendship, without loving or supporting his choice in partners. But, the Scriptures make it crystal clear the types of relationships that are acceptible for Christians.
If a church body decides to negate certain aspects fo truth, that creates a new benchmark. The next group can start from the new benchmark and negate more truth. But the result, is that people are leaving these churches in droves, because they are not finding what they are looking for. Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons have made great strides because of certain Christian's decisions to offer a "watered down" gospel.
Fearlessly offer the gospel of Christ, and let the Holy Spirit do the rest!
